Eat Local

green beans, potatoes, basil, garlic scapes, tomatoes,
peppers, cucumber, swiss chard, zucchini (hiding underneath), heirloom tomatoes

A few months before we had James, hubby brought home a flyer from Pitt on information about receiving boxes of local farm produce and such year-round. I was delighted to finally find something straight from a local farm that was more affordable (and tastes better) than the usually crap I pay high-price for at the local grocery store.

So, we started getting CSA boxes from Isidore Foods right here in Pittsburgh. There are many drop off locations to pick up your box and we decided on a location a few minutes away (on the owner's front porch! how's that for a personal touch!). The produce is usually different every week, depending on what's in season. It's kinda fun because you never know what you're going to get until that day. I have found many new recipes and discovered new vegetables that I never tried before...and ended up liking! You can also get a meat subscription, dairy (including cheese and eggs), fruit, Amish items, etc.

cilantro, tomatillo
We also get a meat subscription which is the same deal with the wild card. I have to say though, I'm not a big fan of meat, but the steaks are out of this world! We've never been disappointed. Everything tastes so much better than anything I've bought at a grocery store, even the expensive organic stuff. We also were receiving a dairy subscription for awhile, which once again, awesome. There are no added hormones or antibiotics in any of the stuff too.

Sigh.

I always wanted to take up organic farming...
